ATA Projects: Systems Monitoring

Description

Links

During the spring of 2009 a suggestion was made during an SRM meeting that we should look into the possibility of having a "Master monitoring service" that could aggregate any and all data we had available on the state of our services and infrastructure. SRM asked ATA to begin looking into this matter.

Preliminary discussions in this area led us to consider a solution that would allow individual units which may already have a monitoring system in place continue to use that system while "feeding information" up to a "master system". The preliminary idea is to utilize SNMP as the protocol through which updates are fed.

It was realized that any serious attempt to create such a monitoring system will take non-trivial resources to complete. As such, we are working to create a simple prototype/proof-of-concept example of such a system to demonstrate to SRM in the future. At that point, a decision can be made as to whether or not we should fund a project to fully implement such a solution.
